The New Insulin Patient - Practical Approaches to Patient Management

Statement of Need
Practicing HCPs struggle to stay abreast of all of the new information that is becoming available with regard to the management of diabetes. This is particularly true in the area of glycemic control for the new insulin patient, which often includes new therapies and technologies. The involvement of patients in managing their diabetes, especially in the area of SMBG, is extremely important in the overall outcomes of disease management. An educational initiative that can provide clinicians with practical, concise, fair-balanced, evidence-based clinical information will bridge knowledge gaps while improving HCPs' performance. All of this will ultimately lead to better patient outcomes.

Target Audience
This continuing medical education activity is intended for health care professionals with a specific interest in the management, diagnosis and treatment of patients with diabetes.

Learning Objectives

  1. List characteristics of patients who would benefit from being transitioned from oral agents to insulin.
  2. Describe the various types of insulin treatments, risks and benefits; and dosing guidelines for a patient started on insulin.
  3. Describe strategies NPs can use to educate and empower patients to take charge of their diabetes.
